South Carolina State House Protest

Last year was unbelievable. It was my fourth year as a full-time independent photographer, and definitely my most exciting and rewarding. I worked for clients that I used to dream of shooting for, and I got to cover some of the biggest stories of the year and meet some incredible people along the way. I am forever grateful to the folks who hire and trust me to tell stories with my camera, whether it be The New York Times covering the Charleston shootings or the Atlanta Falcons to show a behind the scenes of what it’s like to be a professional football player. I also got featured (twice!) by Instagram and blogged by them, helping me gain over 90k followers! It has been a great year for sure, but I definitely have a long way to go.

Talladega for USA Today Sports

Talladega I made the short drive over to Talladega this weekend to cover the races. You can’t always count on the racing to be entertaining, like this weekend, but people and sights always deliver. Here is a selection of my favorite images from Saturday and Sunday.

Talladega for USA Today Sports

talladega pit stopHere are few frames from my assignment on Sunday to cover the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. I didn’t get to spend as much time as I would have liked wandering through the tens of thousands of fans who flock here twice a year, but we did have a spectacular race in some of the most beautiful weather Alabama has to offer. Hopefully I’ll be back for the October edition.

From the Archives: Chase Elliott

Chase EilliottI don’t shoot much NASCAR anymore, but I wanted to share some photos I took a few years ago of  Chase Elliott, who won his first NASCAR Nationwide race tonight at Texas Motor Speedway. It’s always pretty cool when you have the chance to photograph someone before they really make it.

NASCAR and Fire

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Danica Patrick (10) during driver introductions prior to the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway. I spent the past weekend (and about half of last week) in Daytona, Florida. I went down to cover the NASCAR Coke Zero 400, but I also took a little time to make a few images just for me. Above, Danica greets rabid fans during driver introductions.

Nationwide Crash at Daytona

nascar_crash006 Now that I’m home and all the craziness of Speed Week and last weekend’s NASCAR races are over, I finally have a chance to post some of the images from Saturday’s spectacular crash. Superspeedways, such as Daytona and Talladega, host some of the worst crashes in the sport. Just a few short years ago, Carl Edwards slammed into the fence on another last-lap crash at Talladega. Saturday’s Nationwide race was no exception in the crash department.

Coca-Cola 600

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series: Coca-Cola 600This past weekend, I photographed the 52nd annual Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. For the win, I was really hoping it would either be Dale Earnhardt Jr. (cause he’s way past due) or Danica Patrick (because nothing except Tiger winning another major would be bigger news). Alas, that didn’t happen. Instead, it was Hendrick Motorsports newbie Kasey Kahne. I will say that it was nice to photograph someone who shows a little enthusiasm in Victory Lane. Not all do (Matt Kenseth).
