I don’t shoot much NASCAR anymore, but I wanted to share some photos I took a few years ago of Chase Elliott, who won his first NASCAR Nationwide race tonight at Texas Motor Speedway. It’s always pretty cool when you have the chance to photograph someone before they really make it.
These photos were taken in June 2012, when I covered a NASCAR K&N Pro Series East at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Ga. Chase, now 18, was still a newcomer to NASCAR at the time, but most of the racers in that circuit are up-and-comers. The K&N Series is a step (or two) below the Nationwide series and has had some pretty big names make their way through its ranks. I think of it like farm league baseball for NASCAR. He didn’t win the race, but he didn’t crash either, which can be a feat in and of itself.
For those of you who don’t know, Chase is the son of NASCAR legend Bill Elliott, known in these parts as “Awesome Bill from Dawsonville.” And at 18 (Chase is still a senior in high school), I’m sure this is his first of many visits to victory lane.
