Shannon Szabados for The New York Times
Last week, two-time Olympic gold medalist Shannon Szabados made history by becoming the first woman to play for the Southern Professional Hockey League. Szabados, who helped the Canadians win at both the Vancouver and Sochi winter Olympics, signed as a goalie with the Columbus (Ga.) Cottonmouths. Clayton State Soccer
The evening light at Clayton State’s soccer field is gorgeous … too bad it won’t be all season, as the sun goes down earlier and earlier. This frame (CSU’s Jency Ramirez dribbles the ball downfield.) is from last week, when I shot a soccer doubleheader there. The men played the Tampa Spartans, and the women battled the Wingate Bulldogs. It was a heartbreaker, considering both teams tied, even two overtime periods each. Chipper Jones Number Retirement
On Friday, The Ted was sold out, but it wasn’t because fans came only to see the Braves take on the Diamondbacks. People packed into every possible crevasse (and then some) to see their beloved Chipper step on the grass for perhaps the last time. Chipper, who played all of his 19 MLB seasons with the Braves, retired from the game last year, and they retired his famous No. 10 during a pre-game ceremony.

Shady Dale Rodeo
I grew up pretty close to Shady Dale, Georgia, but I didn’t attend my first Shady Dale Rodeo until I was well into my 20s. It was about 6-7 years ago, when I was working as a photographer for the Griffin Daily News. I was blown away that this had been going on right up the road from me for most of my life and I had yet to attend. I immediately fell in love with rodeos and the people who attend them.
