3D Printing Prosthetics for The New York Times

March 12, 2015

150212_nyt_ethan_brown_1071Three-dimensional printing has always fascinated me. The fact that a device can “print” an object out of thin air is something I still have a hard time comprehending sometimes. So I was naturally thrilled when The New York Times called to ask if I would like to illustrate a story about how this technology is helping young children by giving them new hands. The Times sent me to Opelika, Alabama, to photograph 8-year-old Ethan Brown, who was born with three missing fingers on his left hand and uses a prosthetic hand made from a 3D printer. Gameday Experience for the Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta Falcons Gameday Experience

At every Falcons game, you can easily spot the photographers stacked on the sidelines, capturing each play, hit, touchdown, tackle, and dog pile. They’re the ones wearing the brown NFL vests and holding thousands of dollars worth of equipment, hoping to be in the best position possible when the Big Play happens. After all, the action is what game day is all about … without that, there would be no fans, no Georgia Dome. But there’s also a ton of action surrounding the game … the fans, the excitement, the pyrotechnics, the dancing. And while photographing the action is extremely fun and rewarding, I absolutely love shooting all the peripheral elements. To me, it’s what brings color to the game.

Polio Eradication for Newsweek

December 4, 2014

http://kevindliles.wpengine.com/2014/12/polio-eradication-newsweek/Back in August, I had the chance to photograph inside the CDC in Atlanta. The assignment, for Newsweek Europe, was to help illustrate a story about the efforts to completely eradicate polio. I was to take a portrait of Dr. Greg Armstrong (above), CDC incident manager, and photograph the Polio and Picornavirus Laboratory and the Emergency Operations Center. The whole thing was a bit stressful. It’s not everyday that I get to work in one of the most secure places on Earth, not to mention that I was only going to have a few minutes with Dr. Armstrong. Reaction to Immigration Changes for The New York Times

November 22, 2014

I spent 24 hours in Albertville, Ala., this week to document the reaction of President Obama’s sweeping changes to immigration policy for The New York Times. For this story, I worked with reporter Richard Fausset, a staffer with the Times. We believed there was a possibility of lots of celebration on the part of immigrants, especially those here illegally, considering Obama’s directive would shield many of them from the threat of deportation. But that wasn’t the case. [Read more…] about Reaction to Immigration Changes for The New York Times

Jason Heyward Traded to Cardinals

November 18, 2014

jason heywardThere were a lot of upset Braves fans yesterday, as they learned that hometown player Jason Heyward would be traded to the Cardinals. Since the Henry County, Ga. native started his professional career with the Braves in 2010, he has been a fan favorite and a lot of fun to watch. As a tribute to Heyward’s time with the Braves, I’m posting a few of my favorite frames of him. [Read more…] about Jason Heyward Traded to Cardinals
