Back in July, I shot one of the coolest, weirdest, most fascinating stories I’ve worked on to date. It was for the French quarterly magazine We Demain, and it covered the DIY brain stimulation movement. This type of brain stimulation sends very small electric currents through the brain for extended amounts of time (15-25 minutes) and is believed to treat a whole host of ailments, including chronic pain, depression, fibromyalgia, and poor cognitive function. It also can improve memory, advocates say. Yes, this is a real thing. [Read more…] about DIY Brain Stimulation for We Demain magazine
Major League Lacrosse Championship for Lacrosse Magazine
I recently had the opportunity to photograph the Major League Lacrosse championship game, held at Kennesaw State University’s Fifth Third Bank Stadium, for Lacrosse Magazine. It’s not every day that I get to photograph the championship game of a major league sport, so I was super excited about this assignment. Lacrosse is obviously less covered by the media than other major league sports in this country, and that’s a good thing if you’re a photographer. Less coverage means less restrictions, less photographers on the sidelines, less stress, and well, better pictures. Here, Denver Outlaws defenseman Matt Bocklett and teammates celebrate with the Steinfeld Cup after defeating the Rochester Rattlers in dramatic fashion. Friendship Baptist for The New York Times-Part Two
Watching a building that has housed the history of a people come down is never easy. Yes, Friendship Baptist was compensated well ($19 million) for its land, but it’s still painful to watch the walls, foundation, and history crumble into the Georgia clay. Perhaps that’s why there were only a couple church members present for the demolition of Friendship. The land the church has sat on since 1871 was purchased by the City of Atlanta last year so that a new stadium could be constructed for the Atlanta Falcons (as well as a new Major League Soccer team). Folks at Friendship had been preparing for months for the demolition, painstakingly and lovingly removing, packing, and storing for the next chapter. Above, The Rev. Charles Washington, associate minister for church administration for Friendship, watches the demolition. [Read more…] about Friendship Baptist for The New York Times-Part Two
Friendship Baptist for The New York Times-Part One
It’s always wonderful when an editor gives you the green light to photograph a project you’ve pitched; When they take a chance on your vision and trust that you will tell the complete story (or at least they hope you will). Such was the case recently when I photographed the last days of Friendship Baptist Church at its historic location at the corner of Atlanta’s Mitchell Street and Northside Drive. Above: Sula Burr, a Friendship Baptist visitor, arrived a couple hours early to ensure she had a seat for the final service on May 25, 2014. CSU’s Dennis Cox Heads to SFSU
It was no surprise to find out that Clayton State women’s basketball head coach Dennis Cox has taken a job on to bigger things. No one in Clayton State athletics history has taken a program so far, so it was only natural that someone with his talent would end up at a larger university (it was announced yesterday that he has accepted the head coaching position for the women’s basketball program at San Francisco State University).
