Paul Williams for Sports Illustrated

July 11, 2014

Paul Williams

Some assignments change your perspective. Photographing former boxing champ Paul “The Punisher” Williams a few weeks ago was one of them. The assignment was to take a few portraits of Williams for Sports Illustrated’s annual “Where Are They Now?” issue, which published this week. Williams, who had an impressive 41-2 career as a boxer, was paralyzed following a 2012 motorcycle accident in Marietta, Ga. I photographed him at the Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center in Atlanta. US Open for USA TODAY Sports

Covering golf is never easy … long hours in the hot sun, a seemingly ever-changing group of leaders (especially on the first couple of rounds) who must be chased down and photographed, and fear that you’ll release the camera shutter at exactly the wrong time. These are just a few reasons. But photographing golf is also very rewarding. For starters, it’s hard to find a sport with cleaner backgrounds. And the fans … who doesn’t love drunken folks who scream “get in the hole!!!” every chance they get. That does become annoying, but I do love having such direct access to the fans. The only thing separating fans from photographers, and the golfers for that matter, is a thin rope that stretches along the entirety of each course. [Read more…] about US Open for USA TODAY Sports

Vocation: Evans Millican

***This is the first installment of Vocation, a project exploring the relationship between people and their professions. Specifically, those people whose job is so closely intertwined with their identity that it seems to be a part of their DNA. Those people who seem as though they were born to do that particular job. It comes so natural, it would be hard to even conceive of them doing anything else. This is Evans’ story. [Read more…] about Vocation: Evans Millican

Senoia Raceway

May 19, 2014

Senoia RacewayI have been covering racing at the national level (NASCAR, NHRA) for several years now, but there’s nothing quite like the atmosphere of racing at small, hometown tracks like Senoia Raceway. I’ve been driving past this track, which is right off Ga. Hwy 16 between Griffin and Newnan, since 2005, but had never been to a race there until earlier this month. Talladega for USA Today Sports

May 5, 2014

talladega pit stopHere are few frames from my assignment on Sunday to cover the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. I didn’t get to spend as much time as I would have liked wandering through the tens of thousands of fans who flock here twice a year, but we did have a spectacular race in some of the most beautiful weather Alabama has to offer. Hopefully I’ll be back for the October edition. [Read more…] about Talladega for USA Today Sports
